- 1852, Georgia. The Carter family; Sarah, Thomas, and their kids Benjamin (12) and Josie (9) live in a cramped slave cabin on a cotton plantation.
- At night, they come together, sing spirituals, and tell stories about hope and freedom. These moments keep them strong.
- A trusted friend named Moses tells Thomas about the Underground Railroad a secret route to freedom. The family begins to dream of escape.

- They find shelter in a barn owned by a kind woman named Miss Eliza. She gives them food and tells them where to go next.
- Thomas and Sarah decide to run. They pack quietly and leave in the night, hearts pounding, holding their children close.
- While hiding in a church basement, slave catchers search nearby. Everyone stays silent. Josie almost sneezes, but Benjamin gently stops her.
- The family travels at night through woods and across rivers. They're tired, but they keep going, singing softly to stay brave.

- In Ohio, the Carter family starts a new life. Thomas works in a carpentry shop, Sarah helps at a freedmen’s school.
- They reach the Ohio River, free land is on the other side. A boatman rows them across as the sun rises. They cry tears of joy.
- Benjamin and Josie finally go to school. They learn to read and write, excited for a future they never thought possible.
- Years later, Josie becomes a teacher. She tells her students the story of her family’s journey so history is never forgotten.
