- The initial purpose for the island of Hati was a Pirate outpost. And the original french people who settled on the island made a living by selling leather and a kind of smoked beef. Although the French had settled on the island the first inhabitants of the island were the Spanish. The Haitian revolution was between 1791 and 1794. The revolution was about the slaves on the island revolting against nearly everyone on the island that wasn't one of them. The slaves didn't want to work so hard in such bad conditions and still not even be paid or treated properly. Additionally, the start of the revolution where the slaves revolted was also largely due to the slaves hearing and being inspired by the French King decided to let the slaves be free.
