- And I'm Mr. Schnauzer. For example, in Wisconsin, people are influenced by a number of different sources, including talk radio, cable news, and broadcast television.
- Hi kids! I'm Mr. Beagle, and today I'm going to explain the author of this comic's research area.
- Democrats tend to trust more liberal news sources, like CNN or the New York Times.
- Republicans tend to trust more conservative news sources, like Fox News or Breitbart.
- In the author's research project, they investigate the relationship between media consumption, beliefs, and behavior.
- People in the United States often form their beliefs and decisions based on the media they consume.
- This is Mrs Calico (she/her). She is a member of the Cat party, and she reads the Meow York Times. The author wants to know what decisions she makes that correlate with her political views and news diet.
- The idea is that if we know she is a Cat party member who reads the Meow York Times, we can, with data, make assumptions about what else she likes and dislikes.
- For example, if we find that (with a sufficient sample size) most Cat party members who read the Meow York Times like long naps and boxes, and dislike hairballs and water, we can assume that Mrs Calico is likely to have the same opinions.
- The author of this comic wants to understand the effects of these choices on people's behaviors. Here's an example from the animal world to help explain.
- We create this data by surveying individuals and asking them about their political opinions, their news diet and preferences, and what they buy, like, and dislike.
