  • Iv'e heard that in Mr. Blair's class today we are going to learn about surface area and the small intestine! Surface area is the amount of space that a three-dimensional shape takes up and your small intestine is the not-so-small organ that further digests food and absorbs nutrients.
  • Wow, that's awesome! Did you know that naturally, the digestive system does its best to increase the surface area of foods you eat to maximize the amount of nutrients being absorbed.
  • False! The small intestine has many wrinkles and folds which make the surface not smooth!
  • I remember now! The small intestine is covered with extremely small projections known as villi, and those villi have even smaller projections on them called microvilli.
  • True or false: The small intestine is completely smooth.
  • I learned so much today! Apparently, the surface area of your small intestine is estimated to nearly cover an entire football field!
  • I found it interesting when Mr. Blair mentioned that approximately the first 25 centimeters of your small intestine is called your duodenum which is where the majority of nutrients from your food are being absorbed. This came as a surprise to me sense the small intestine is so long and most of the nutrients absorption is taking place in the very beginning.
