  • Good day professor Mark,I wish you are ready for my questions today
  • Hello Mary, of course, I enjoy the discussion with smart students like you'Have a seat please
  • the question that arises on the tongues of academics nowadays, “Are ethics in technology field illusion or reality?”
  • That is an important question, but first, let's illustrate what ethics is ?
  • I think ethics must be derived from law.
  • Actually, that is controversial. At one time, laws, civil societies and some holy texts blessed the slave trade and considered moral. (Enriquez,2018)
  • Ethics, also known as moral philosophy, is the study of what is morally good and bad, right and wrong. The term can also refer to any set of moral values or principles (Singer, 2022)
  • Let me try to define technology based on previous modules, so we can connect the topics together.
  • That is important, go ahead please.
  • Technology is divided into two parts: 1) the physical component, which includes items such as products, tooling, equipment, blueprints, techniques, and processes; and 2) the informational component, which includes knowledge in management, marketing, production, quality control, reliability, skilled labor, and functional areas(Kumar et al, 1999)
  • Of course, the producers and the consumers.
  • So, technology is a product, but who is involved in this process?
  • Obviously, consumers are people who use the technology, and the producers are Mathematicians, computer engineers and scientists in related fields, and on advanced level, the companies which own the technology
  • They control us and break our privacy!
  • don’t be judgmental and jump to conclusions, let’s define privacy first.
  • It is therightthat someone has tokeeptheirpersonallifeorpersonalinformationsecretorknownonly to asmallgroupofpeople. (Cambridge, 2022)
  • That is unfair, every time I want to install a new application, I have to agree to a contract that challenges my privacy!
  • It is totally unethical when companies touch your privacy and break your rights by their mandatory contracts
  • According to thethe Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, the vast majority (92%) expressed some level of concern about the protection of their privacy and most Canadians are also concerned that their online personal information will be used by social media platforms or identity thieves. (PCOC, 2018)
  • People have become uncomfortable in the workplace as a result of these immoral behaviors. (Zwieg,2020).and that will affect productivity and the economy in total.
  • It is scary to realize that companies take our privacy and use it to their own benefits.
  • sure
  • As individuals we can't deal withTechnologychallengeslikePace of Change, Privacy, Security, Cyberbullying and many others. We need to increase the awareness of ethics in technology sectors.
  • Most corporate data most likely belongs to the companies, so the companies are the owner of our data, and even though they get our approval to collect the data, it is unethical to sell them.
  • It is a huge problemif the data is used to consciously or unconsciously oppress certain groups, or if there is inherent bias.
  • Exactly, Humanity's moral system will be destroyed. And it gets worse when companies offer money in exchange for privacy; it's as if we're trading our values.
  • I'm thinking about closing all my accounts and no longer dealing with these technology monsters.
  • This is not a good solution, because technology occupies all our life sectors.
  • Have you heard about Hippocratic oath?
  • Sure, The Hippocratic Oath is a medical ethics oath that requires a new physician to swear to uphold specific ethical standards. (Wikipedia, 2022)
  • A leading researcher has suggested that mathematicians, computer engineers, and scientists in technology fields take a Hippocratic oath to protect the public from powerfulnewtechnologies under development in laboratories and techfirms, werequire a Hippocratic oath in the same way that one exists in medicine.(Sample, 2019)
  • Researchers are developing systems that collect and sell personal data, exploit human frailties, and make life-or-death decisions, making the issue urgent.
  • Studying ethics in technology is a new conversation, which means using your discretion in every situation is crucial to maintaining an ethical approach to your work. Being aware of the consequences of your behaviors, both good and bad, is what sets you apart from other IT professionals. Reflecting on individual ethical dilemmas and potential solutions can help you make ethical choices in any moral situation.
  • I wish that we can raise the awareness and responsibility about ethics of technology.
  • That is the mission of new generation.
  • I really enjoyed this conversative.Thank you for your time .Good bye
  • My pleasure,Take care and good bye.
