- Cellular respiration is a series of metabolic reactions and processes that occur within our cells to transform chemical energy from oxygen molecules or nutrients in ATP and waste products are release. It has three stages: Glycolysis, Krebs Cycle, and Electron Transport Chain. The process begins in the cytoplasm and is completed in a mitochondrion. For each glucose molecule that undergoes this process, up to 38 molecules of ATP are produced. If something blocks the step in ETC, mitochondrial disease will occur and without this, cells cannot produce ATP.The goal of the cellular respiration is to make ATP. It is essential in our lives because it's the process that provides our cells with energy needed for it to function properly and for us to live.
