  • Today in class we will be talking about intra and inter molecular forces!
  • To start, can anyone give me a real life example of an ionic bond?
  • I know one!An example of an ofionic bond, is the chemicalbondingbetween bromide and potassium. It produces KBr which is often used as a treatment for animals with severe health conditions. Ionic bonds are very hard to break, therefore they lead to substances having very high melting and boiling points.
  • Ionic bonding involves INTERmolecular forces.
  • Covalent bonds are another example of intermolecular forces. Carbon Dioxide is a common covalent compound that we see in our everyday life! It is used in soft drinks, and when the can is opened, the carbon dioxide is released. Covalent bonds cause low melting points and are good conductors of electricity.

  • Did y'all know that hydrogen bonding can involve both intra and intermolecular bonding? An example of hydrogen bonding is ethanol. All alcoholcontains a hydrogen atom attached to an atom of nitrogen or oxygen.Hydrogen bonds will lead to higher melting and boiling points.

  • London dispersion forces are intermolecular! They are most commonly found in halogens and noble gases. Because London dispersion has weak attractive forces, it lowers boiling points.
  • Dipole-dipole forces are intermolecular as well! Water is the best example of this force because H20 is a polar molecule that is attracted to another H20 molecule. Dipole-dipole.causes water. to have high surface tension.
