We are three witches at a Scottish desert. We're planning to meet up with Macbeth since we predicted That he will be named Thane of Cawdor and King of Scotland. (Macbeth Act 1, scene 1)
At a military camp near his palace at Forres, King Duncan of Scotland asks for news about the Scots’ battle with the Irish invaders. The captain says that the Scottish generals Macbeth andBanquofought with great courage. The captain then describes for Duncan how Macbeth slew the traitorous thane of Cawdor. Then a Scottish nobleman, enters and tells the king that the traitorous thane of Cawdor has been defeated and the army of Norway went away. Duncan says that the thane of Cawdor has to be killed and that Macbeth, the hero of the army, will be given Cawdor’s title. (Macbeth Act 1, scene 2)
Near the battlefield, the three witches appear and say that Macbeth is coming. The witches hail Macbeth as thane of Glamis (his original title) and as thane of Cawdor. Macbeth is baffled because he has not yet heard of King Duncan’s decision. The witches also declare that Macbeth will be king one day. Macbeth is stunned and asks the witches for more information, but they start talking to Banquo. They call Banquo “lesser than Macbeth, and greater,” and “not so happy, yet much happier”; then they tell him that he will never be king but that his children will sit upon the throne. Macbeth implores the witches to explain what they meant by calling him thane of Cawdor, but they vanish. (Act 1, scene 3)
