New Technology


The purpose of the Transcontinental Railroad was so that not only western goods but also telegraphs could be sent much more efficiently. Unlike the Pony Express, the Transcontinental Railroad is dependable, has larger capacity, and has a much higher speed over long distance.

Old Technology


The Pony Express established in April of 1860 was created to rapidly send mail from one place to another, with the help of horses. The disadvantages of the Pony Express included difficulties rider would face in extreme weather, harsh terrains, and attacks by Indians or bandits. Due to the multitude of disadvantages of the Pony Express, the Transcontinental Railroad was introduced.

Impact:

Both the Transcontinental Railroad and Pony Express impacted the Westward Expansion by improving the communication amongst people. Individuals were able to communicate across the country in the matter of a couple days

Impact on Farmers:

During the Pony Express, farmers lost much profit due to the lack of horses. Since, horses were the mode of transportation for the Pony Express, the amount of horses in farms decreased leading to less profits. However, once the Transcontinental Railroad was introduced, farmers regained the profits lost as not more horses were needed for the transportation of mail.
