The pro-slavery group stormed the stronghold of Lawrence on May 21st, 1856 by destroying printing presses, looting stores and homes, and committing arson. This was known as the 'Sack of Lawrence'. John Brown, an abolitionist, marched through Pottawatomie Valley and dragged 5 men from their homes and brutally murdered them. He went with his 4 sons and three other men. This occured on May 24th. There were many more little squabbles between the two groups.
