The ocean symbolizes something that can be dangerous if not respected. Olly's eyes are blue, and when Olly and Maddy meet, he describes the ocean to her as if it is a living thing that is so awesome and beautiful. When they go to Hawaii, while they are snorkeling, Maddy feels alive and Olly says the ocean can symbolize both life and death.

"I bought you a present. I thought it would make you feel less lonely."(Nicola 158)
Maddys mom symbolizes caring and loving. This is shown in the book because no matter what Maddys mom is always looking out for Maddy making sure she doesn't leave or get any sickness that could lead her to death. She is always making time to do one on one stuff with her. No matter what Maddys mom is always loving, supportive, and showing she wants her daughter to have the best live even if it means she stays inside.

Books symbolize a distraction. This is because when she feels at her lowest, there is always a book to read and keep her mind off of SCID. Maddy is always eager to finish a book so she can start a new one. With her SCID she can't leave her house, so reading makes the time while waiting in her house fun and enjoyable. Finally, books are another good symbol in my book.
