Toussaint L'Ouverture was born a slave in French Haiti, fortunate to have a liberal master he quickly became educated. He took advantage of this by reading whatever he could get his hands on. He became enlightened after reading about French Enlightenment.
Napoleon beat Spain, taking Haiti and putting the "Rights of Man" into effect before plantation owners fought the measure and had it retracted in 1791.
The slaves, after hearing about this mass betrayal started a revolt, Toussaint became the leader and brilliantly lead the people in the fight against the French.
The Jacobins, who were in charge of France at the time, voted to end slavery, there was joy among the people of Haiti but the Jacobins soon lost their power and ended the reign of terror, slavery was reinstated in the colonies.
Being at war with Haiti, Napoleon was tired of it. He agreed to give Haiti independence and Toussaint agreed to retire from public life. A few months later, the French surrendered.
Haiti got it's independence, Toussaint was placed in prison and died there. The people of Haiti fought until the very end in his name and won.
