  • Military peace Establishment Act
  • The Military Peace Establishment Act documented and advanced a new set of laws and limits for the U.S. military. It was approved by Congress and signed on March 16, 1802, by President Thomas Jefferson, who was fundamental in its drafting and proposal. Jefferson also advanced the Act with political objectives in mind.
  • Election of Thomas Jefferson
  • Thomas Jefferson came to the presidency after a long and bitter presidential campaign. But he had a plan for policy changes in the government. The election that placed Jefferson in office had been a divided one. He would now have to work to unite the country again.
  • Thoughts on national debt
  • The United States has had differently sized national debts at different times in its history. From the 1700s to the 1800s, the debts usually occurred during or following wars, which require a lot of spending. In the 1900s the national debt grew larger. One reason for this was the Great Depression, a time of economic slowdown. During that time the federal government began spending more on social programs to help Americans who were suffering. Military spending during World War II and the Cold War, as well as new social programs, kept the national debt high throughout the 1900s.
