- Slide: 1
- Francie and her brother Neeley go to Carney’s to turn in the junk that they found. She earns 16 cents from him and gets one more for letting him pinch her cheek. She reported to her brother, and they split the money up: 4 cents for each of them, and 8 cents for the bank at home, with Francie having one more.
- Slide: 2
- Later, Neeley goes to play ball in the lots with friends, and Francie tags along. She sees the boys look for tin foil and cigarette butts, then they bully a young Jewish boy, but soon after going to play ball. Francie got tired of watching them after a while, so she heads to the library.

- Francie walks in to pick out her new book. She always reads one per day, on Saturday two, in alphabetical order. Once she's finished the Z's, she'll read them all again.

- Francie heads back home, making a comfortable position on the fire escape. There was a nice breeze and good sunlight, along with shadows of a tree right in front of her. Eventually, she sees a dentist named Frank Fraber and his horse, Bob. She also sees Flossie, who chases after men and tried to flirt with him.

- Francie and Neeley’s father returns. He was working that night, so Francie ironed his clothes for him. It was Saturday, and Francie considered that his day to talk. He reminisced about his childhood, but also continued to say that he wasn’t worth anything. He never wanted a family, but he loved his kids very much.

- Francie walked her father to the trolley car. He got on and waved good-bye to his daughter.

- Francie goes to see Flossie and Henny Gaddis. She asks Flossie what costume she’ll wear to the dance that night.

- Flossie showed her costume for that night. It was made of a purple satin sheath with layers of cerise Tarleton as underskirts. There was also a black sequined butterfly stitched on and it had one long sleeve that was pea green chiffon.

- After she got back home, Mama and Sissy return, and Francie was very excited to see Sissy. However, she had to leave early, but not after she gave Francie a gift.

- Francie and her mother then remembered plans of dinner for that week, and Francie remembers the ‘pickle days’ and how she goes to a store to order the same thing she always did. But the man yelled at her for calling it a ‘penny sheeny pickle.’ She never meant anything bad, but she also didn’t know what the word meant.

- That night was a night where the family would have a great meal. Francie and Neeley went to a butcher named Werner for chopped steak. They went to another named Hassler for a soup bone.

- Francie and her family reminisced of the past and people they knew. Eventually, as Francie felt a soft ocean breeze, she went up to her room and drifted off to sleep.
