Storyboard Description

This storyboard explains the application and explanation of the law of inertia. It is about a boy who goes home in car with a coffee in his hand.

Storyboard Text

  • Come on son, drink the rest of your coffee in the car.
  • OK!
  • OH NO! the coffee spilled all over me what am I going to do now? Why does that happen when you move the car?
  • Lets go, Vroom Vroom!
  • It happens because as the car moves forward from under the coffee cup, the coffee spills on your lap. And when you apply brakes while the car is in the motion, the car stops. However, the coffee in the cup continues to forward with the same speed and direction of car before the brakes were applied-and hence spills over.
  • OUCH! I got flung forward when you hit the brakes. Why did that happen?
  • OK! We are home!
  • The force of the road on the locked wheels provides the unbalanced force to change the car's state of motion, yet there is no unbalanced force to change your own state of motion. Thus, you continue in motion, sliding along the seat in forward motion. A person in motion stays in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unlessacted upon by the unbalanced forceof a seat belt. Yes! Seat belts are used to provide safety for passengers
  • Oh, this is a good chance for me to explain the Newtons first law of motion to you. Both the coffee spilling and you getting flung can be explained by this law. It states that a body in state of rest or motion stays in that state until acted upon by an unbalanced force. You understand?
  • YEAH! I got it.
