Toussaint L'Ouverture was born into Slavery in Saint Domingue. He learned about Africa from his father. He also learned to read and write.
In 1789 The French Revolution took over France. The moderate revolutionaries were not wiling to end slavery but they applied the "Rights of Man" to all Frenchmen.

The betrayal triggered many slave revolts in Saint Dominique, so Toussaint became the leader of the slave rebellion.
The Jacobins brought death to France and wanted to take the revolution as far as it could go. This lead to them voting to end slavery in the French colonies including Haiti.
There was joy among the blacks in Haiti and Toussaint agreed to help the French army eject the British and Spanish.

After reinstating slavery in the French colonies, plunging Haiti into war, Napolean got Haiti off his back by 1803. He and Toussaint agreed to terms of peace. Napolean also agreed to acknowledge Haitian independence and Toussaint agreed to retire from public life.
