Storyboard Text

  • Hi Mama, good morning. I have a homework in Social Studies and I have a lot of questions.
  • Sure Nathan, what do you need to know?
  • Well, there were so many amazing members of the Propaganda Movement, so many people who were passionate about the cause. Why did it fail?
  • Yes, of course. It started with the deaths of Father Gomez, Father Burgos, and Father Zamora -- the GomBurZa. And it ended with the execution of our national hero Jose Rizal.
  • There were many reasons why it failed. But first, do you know how started?
  • What they had was a good idea. When you have an idea in your head and you start working on it and you want to make it work, you need to start putting your plan into action, right?
  • Yes Mama, which is exactly what they did. They put their plan into action. The propagandists started that movement.
  • But there was something that they lacked.
  • They lacked the funds to make it work, Nathan. Sometimes, no matter how good an idea, if you don't have the funds to back it up, it sometimes falls apart.
  • That's all? They didn't have the funds? It just can't be that, right? I'm sure there are other reasons too?
  • No. There were also some leaders who were ambitious, and somewhat greedy. They were able to do some reforms, but those were mostly for their own interests. And some of the propagandists were disillusioned.
  • Oh. That doesn't sound so good.
  • Plus, the Spanish government also did not agree to most of the Movement's demands. That's why it failed. They made some minor reforms, though, like the abolition of the tobacco monopoly and the reduction of forced labor. But it's not much.
  • Yeah, I know.
  • I know. And, there were also some internal conflicts going on with some propagandists like Jose Rizal and Gregorio del Pilar. And when there's conflict in your team, that can be bad for your cause.
  • I understand now, Mama. Thank you for explaining that to me.
  • Anytime, Nathan. You know I'm always here to help.
