  • 1860s
  • Yes,if we sell it to The United States,it might "offset the designs of our rival in the pacific,Great britain.
  • Sir,we might have to sell Russian America,It is becoming costly to defend
  • Soon the 1867 Treaty of Cession was Signed.
  • Soon...(March 30,1867)
  • The United States thanks you for the land
  • Mr.Seward,with this treaty,you buy alaska for roughly 2 cents an acre!
  • Many Americans were mad about how seemingly useless the new territory was, and the secrecy behind the deal.
  • Seward's folly was a waste!
  • About 30 years later, (George Carmack or skookum jim mason the finder is undetermined,but most historians point to Jim) finds gold while salmon fishing on August 16,1896
  • Soon many people arrived with the hope of Striking it rich.Miners had to face many obstacles:Steep slopes,sharp rocks,snow,Disease,And of course,the cold.
  • By 1899,the gold rush was winding down
  • Many miners did not find gold.However, the gold rush helped the country out of a depression,Helped poulate Alaska,And attracted people to seattle,the last jumping off point heading to Alaska.It is interesting because of all the challenges that needed to be solved to arrive.It also shows that through hard work,anything is possible.It also helped westward expansion.Another morale to the story  is perserverance gets you where you need to go.
