  • Before the Revolution (1754-1788): A lot of things had occurred in France to spark a revolution. France was deep in debt, food shortages and prices led peasants starving and angry and corrupt nobles formed an oligarchy that aimed to line their pockets with wealth while keeping the poor poor with taxation

  • Collapse of Estate General (20 June 1789): The 'people' challenge the King's authority when when members of the Third Estate – which represents ‘the people’ – form their own National Assembly, to campaign for constitutional reform

  • 14 July 1789: Storming of Bastille: The storming of the fort of Bastille occurred when Louis XVI felt threatened by revolution and sent troops into Paris. rebels storm the prison fortress of the Bastille, a symbol of royal authority. Paris falls from the King’s control. Today this date is celebrated as Bastille Day in France.
  • Following the Storming of Bastille: The king is executed by revolutionists and the french republic is established. Paris goes to war with many different European countries during the reign of terror. In 1795 the directory takes power but is later replaced by Napolean in 1799, as the directory is found to be unpopular. France enters the Napoleonic era.
