- Well the physics behind how an airplane flies is quite complex for your age but it is true that the fuel used pollutes the environment as it produces a lot of pollutants thats why scientists have made a more sustainable fuel from plant!
- WOW! I wonder how an airplane has the power to lift so much weight into the air. Won't the amount of fuel use pollute the environment?
- Yes, many plants are used to make biofuel like sugarcane, corn sometimes even trash is used. In Abu Dhabi a special saltwater plant's seeds called Salicornia or glasswort is used to make seed oil which is then refined to make usable airplane fuel.
- If it is good for the environment and is as efficient as normal fuel then why aren't all vehicles using biofuel?
- Fuel made from plants?But the fuel which we use comes from crude oil which was made millions of years ago.This is revolutionary!
- Well the main reason is that the process for making biofuels hasn't been perfected yet and the process can be quite tedious, other reasons include that many older cars require fuel line replacement which quite expensive and people will just continue to use petrol than spending money. Also sometimes biofuels can cause cracks in the engine which is a hazard and to grow the crops require for biofuel large areas of forest should be cleared which would cause deforestation and contribute to global warming
- The process of making the bio fuel is not perfected? Can you tell me how biofuels are made?
- Well, the process varies depending on the plant from which the biofuel is made, but all of them have some steps in common, first the oil has to be properly filtered and all of the water content should be removed which helps to improve the efficiency of the fuel. Then various chemicals such as sodium hydroxide, methanol which is a type of alcohol are added as heated slowly with care. This process added chemicals which ensure that the fuel burns completely and doesn't leave any soot behind
- Also you mentioned that plant sali- somthing. What is the process for making biofuel from that?
- Well, since the process is so lengthy and complex no wonder why they didnt perfect it yet.
- Well most of the process is similar but since seeds are used the seeds will have to be winnowed and then crushed like olives to get the oil out of them. This oil is then used as an additive to normal airplane fuel. the oil of this plant is also used in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and even in food due to its various nutritional benefits .
- I never knew that Salicornia seed oil can be used in places other that airplane fuel. I guess that it is a win-win if you use it.
