- This pyramid was mainly made from limestone which is a sedimentary rock.
- What makes sedimentary rock different from other types of rock?
- Sedimentary rock is made when sediments of rock sink to an ocean floor and compress to make a layer of strata.
- Over time layers of strata build up on each other and it creates noticeable lines in the rock. This makes fossils in the rock more common.
- What other types of rock are there?
- This is metamorphic rock. It is made from rock that is put under great pressure and heat undergorund and it is folded and twisted.
- How can you tell the difference between sedimentary rock and metamorphic?
- Metamorphic rock is distinguishable from sedimentary by the bent lines through the rock as sedimentary as relatively straight lines.
- Are there any other types of rock?
- Igneous rock is made when metamorphic or sedimentary rock is heated until it melts and reforms as igneous rock. Igneous rocks often have crystals.
- What types or igneous rocks are there?
- Some types of igneous rock are melted on the surface such as basalt therefore it doesn't form any crystals. Rocks like granite are formed underground therefore they have time to form crystals.
