  • This university has a long history. Many nurses learned to care for people here. Nursing isn't just a job, it's a special way of helping others. It's a kind of gift, passed down through generations. I wonder how it all began.

  • Long before modern hospitals, we used plants and herbs to make people feel better. It was a gift, passed down through our family for many years. The first nurses in the Philippines used those same gifts, and they cared for people with kindness in their hearts.

  • And Sor Ricarda Mendoza understood that nurses needed good training to help people. She worked very hard to build this school, so nurses could learn the best ways to care for others. She wanted to make sure everyone received the best care.

  • The University of the Philippines College of Nursing was established in 1948. Its first Dean, Miss Julita Sotejo, worked hard to make nursing recognized as a respected profession, equal to medicine and law.

  • MCU College of Nursing began offering its BSN program in 1947, with Miss Consuelo Gimeno as its first principal. The MCU Hospital became a training ground for many of our first nurses.

  • Iloilo Mission Hospital, established in 1906 by the Baptist Foreign Mission, was the site of the first Nurses Board Examinations in 1944, paving the way for Filipino nurses to become licensed professionals.
  • During labor, midwives known as ‘mabuting hilot’ were called in to assist. If the birth was difficult, it was thought to be caused by witches, and to disperse their influence, gunpowder was explored from a bamboo cane close to the sufferer's head.
  • Miss Anastacia Giron-Tupas, regarded as the 'Dean and pioneer of Philippine Nursing,' initiated the formation of the Filipino Nurses Association (FNA) on September 2, 1922. FNA was incorporated in 1924 and joined the International Council for Nurses in 1929.
  • The University of Santo Tomas College of Nursing is the first nursing college in the Philippines. It evolved from the School of Male Nurses opened in 1877 and had Ricarda Mendoza as its first dean.
