- In this scene Frederik Henry was eating cheese with his soldiers while waiting for an attack and got blown up. He suffered a devastating leg injury which brought him to the hospital. Which is where the story begins.

- In this scene Frederick is in the hospital where he meets his nurse Miss Gage and his girlfriend Miss Barkley. He falls in love with both of them while he is injured and this leaves him to a hard decision later in the story.
- “There isnt always an explanation for everything.”
- He had to get surgery done to get shrapnel out of his leg. Miss Barkley and the doctor operated on him. They had to do the procedure outside to have his wound exposed to nutrients.
- Miss Gage looks much uglier in the light
- It's going to be ok
- Never leave me
- Theres not many patients in the hospital which gives Frederic lots of time alone with Miss Barkley and Miss Gage. After the surgery he fell in love with his nurse after she cared for him.
- “When you love you wish to do things for. You wish to sacrifice for. You wish to serve.”
- In this scene Miss Barkley and Frederic are finally confessing that their love is real and not fake. Frederic asks Miss Barkley to never leave him and the she asks him to marry her.
- Promise you will never leave me an I'll love you forever
- Lets get married when you get out of the hospital
- Frederic is cleared to walk again and Miss Barkley helped him learn of to walk again with his cane. They then decide to go back to Italy and the story continues beyond the hospital.
