- Maggie and her mom live prepared for Dee's visit by sweeping the yard nice and clean. The house sits in a pasture.
- Ten or twelve years ago, their old house caught afire. Maggie's arm was burned in the fire. Dee was standing outside under the tree when Maggie and her mom barely made it out of the house.
- Mama and the church raised money to send Dee to school in Augusta. Dee was smart, confident, a nice dresser, and didn't let anything stand in the way of what she wanted.
- Dee visits with her boyfriend named Hakim a barber. She was dressed in a long dress with bright orange and yellow colors of her heritage. She had on big gold earrings, dangling bracelets and wore her hair in an afro. Dee told her mama her new name was Wangero Leewanika Kemanjo and that Dee was dead.
- Dee wants the old family quilts. She doesn't think Maggie appreciates them and will use them every day. Maggie is upset but is willing to let Dee take the quilts. Mama told Dee she was saving the quilts to give Maggie when she marries John Thomas and to choose two of the other quilts.
- Dee is upset because her mama wouldn't let her take the quilts. She told Maggie to make something of herself. She said things have changed but the way Maggie and her mama live, nobody would know it. Dee and Hakim a Barber left.
