- In Santa Cecilia, Mexico, Imelda Rivera is the wife of a musician who left her and her 3 year old daughter Coco behind because of music.
- The great-grandson of Coco Miguel accidentally breaks the picture frame of her great great great grandmother and Coco, He picks it up and finds that the picture has his great-great-grandfather's picture, but with the face missing and him holding Ernesto de la Cruz's guitar he thinks that De la Cruz is his ancestor.
- Miguel takes the guitar that is Ernestos and gets cursed and sent to the land of the dead where he sees his dead family, but he has to be blessed to return by sunrise or he will die there. He says "No" to be blessed by his family because he will not be allowed to play music ever again.
- Miguel meets Hector who is his actual ancestor instead of De la Cruz, who agrees to help him get the blessing of Ernesto, and Miguel will take his photo to his daughter.
- Miguel gets to Ernesto de la Cruz but finds out that he is the one who murdered Hector. He kicks Miguel and Hector out.
- Miguel realizes Hector is his real great-great-grandfather because he mentions his daughter, Coco, Hector can give his blessing but he needs to give him his photo that Ernesto took to Miguel.
