Storyboard Text
I wish we could find someplace that we can get food because these birds keep eating our trash!
This cheese supply we found is also really good!
Wow! it’s great that we can live here without any worries
Oh no! A cat is gonna eat us! Run!
Yum! Look at these yummy white rats to eat!
A family of white rats start off great due to their selective advantage of blending in with the trash bags in the dump, but then some crows start coming and eating the trash as well as making things unsafe. They decide to move into the abandoned building next door.
MMM-MMM! Those sure were delicious. I can’t wait to eat more!
Hey! Why can’t it see her!

Hey! Why can’t it see her!
The family of rats moves into the abandoned building and finds no predators. They then breed like crazy, producing few offspring with a genetic difference of brown fur that matches the floor and makes it hard to notice.
Ha ha ha! You have nowhere to run, white rats! I will eat you!
Yum!
EEK! Run for your lives!
The rats run into their biggest predator yet, a hungry stray cat. The cat can easily spot them due to their once advantageous fur. They are all forced to run into hiding as the cat eyes them and makes its move.
We love this cheese! Now we don’t have to worry about the cat anymore! Thanks evolution!
Oh boy, I sure am hungry! I haven’t eaten any rats in weeks! I’ve only been eating gross scraps!
The cat eats most of the rat population in the building, but some manage to hide. On the other hand, the genetically-different brown rats are able to blend in with the gross brown floor and not be seen by the cat.
Wow! The cat can’t see me! I must blend in with the floor!
Increasing in numbers, the brown rats continue to survive and reproduce faster than the white rats. The cat also keeps eating the white rats, preventing them from staying dominant in the population. Over time, more and more brown rats appear.
The brown rats populate wildly due to their selective advantage of not being seen by the cat and continue to thrive. Eventually the whole population of those originally white rats tuns brown. They stay fine in their new environment. Evolution is a cool thing!
