  • EXPOSITION
  • Stanley Yelnats, a smart and unlucky kid, is sent off to a correctional boot camp in the Texas desert. Other kids he meets there introduce and feed in infatuation of the history of the camp they are in. After finding out there is treasure, he and a few of his friends decide to go after the treasure while also being faced with countless adversity from camp superiors to secure the treasure and change the lives of the kids and their families forever.

  • CONFLICT
  • While walking home from school, a pair of shoes randomly fell into Stanley’s backpack. These shoes were special because they were donated to the shelter by baseball player Clyde Livingston. Due to this happening, there is a hearing and the judge not understanding that it was all a big coincidence sentenced him to 18 months at Camp Green Lake, a juvenile corrections facility.

  • RISING ACTION
  • Having arrived at Camp Green Lake and not knowing anyone, Stanley started to get accustomed to his knew home. He eventually meets camp superiors and 5 other kids who had committed crimes themselves, X-Ray, Zero, Zigzag, Squid, and Armpit. As the story goes on, he finds out about some missing treasure, finding part of it but not getting any credit due to his naivety. Continuing, he starts to grow close to others he has met, specifically Zero, to some in the story he is mute, but he is just very shy.

  • CLIMAX
  • Zero, feeling down due to other kids and counselors making fun of him, runs miles away from camp with no food or water. He felt that the others made fun of him due tohis upbringing and illiteracy. Stanley also leaves after him, because he is a good friend and cares about him. As the story continues Stanley finds a boat that was sunk a long time ago on the lake, come to find out Zero is hiding under it. In desperation and luck Stanley sees a mountain far away in the distance called Big Thumb Mountain, and believes that there is water and food there, so they starttheir journey to the mountain.

  • FALLING ACTION
  • Miraculously, Stanley and Zero make it to the top of Big Thumb Mountain. Halfway up, Stanley must carry Zero because he gets sick from not having any food or water for a long period of time. Once at the top of the mountain, Stanley starts to dig a hole because he recognizes there is mud, thus meaning water is present. They also find onions, but after a while Stanley lets Zero know that they must return to Camp due to his health being at risk.

  • RESOLUTION
  • Continuing, Stanley carries Zero back down the mountain to get back to Camp. Upon return, he shows the Warden where he found the buried treasure in his hole and not X-Ray’s. Positively, Stanley, with help from the counselors reunite Zero with his mom that he has not seen over a decade and Stanley’s family is free of the curse of unluck.
