Another Spanish explorer by the name of Hernan Cortes was sent to explore present day Mexico by the governor of Cuba in 1519. Upon arrival, the Aztecs viewed Cortes and his men as gods because of their horses, firearms, and metal armor.
Catholic priests also came to Texas. These priests were also called Friars and Padres. They were trying to spread Christianity to the Native Americans (God).
3 reasons for exploration
The Spanish were led by young noblemen looking to make a name for themselves (glory) and get rich (gold).
Pineda became the first European to observe and map the Texas coast.
Pineda
In 1519 the Spanish explorer, Pineda set out from Jamaica to map the coast of the Gulf of Mexico.
Cabeza de Vaca
In 1526 the Spanish explorer, Cabeza de Vaca, was exploring Florida as a member of the Narvaez expedition. This expedition was lost and forced to build boats to sail back to Mexico in 1528.
The boats were caught in a hurricane where Cabeza de Vaca and several men were shipwrecked on Galveston Island.
Many of the Spaniards died in the harsh conditions of South Texas.
