  • On October 1789; thousands of Parisian women rioted over the rising price of bread. They demanded for the National Assembly to take action and provide bread. Louis and Marie Antoinette to return to Paris. They broke in and killed some guards. Louis eventually agreed and never saw the palace again. This signaled the change of power and radical reforms to overtake France.
  • Execution of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette
  • The Rights of Man called for Freedom and equal rights for all men throughout France. Monarchy was restricted and all citizens had the right to take part in the legislative process. The slogan they adopted was life, liberty, and fraternity.
  • Rise of Napoleon
  • Radicals took over the Revolutionary government. They arrested and executed anyone who might not be loyal to the revolution. Robespierre was the dictator of France and stated that terror would be the order of the day so people don't come up with ideas. He led the Committee of Public Safety and the Jacobins. He wanted to make Terror an official government policy. Around 40,000 people in France were killed during this time and over 200,000 were arrested. People finally had enough and they planned to overthrow Robespierre. So they arrested and executed him marking him the last casualty of the Reign of Terror.
  • Fall of Napoleon
  • In November 1792, a secret cupboard was discovered containing King Louis XVI true beliefs of the revolution and correspondence with foreign powers was discovered in Tuileries Palace. He was brought to trial and was charged with Treason. He was sent to the guillotine on January 21, 1793. It's stated that King Louis said "My people, I die innocent!" then turned to the executioners "Gentleman, I am innocent of everything of which I am accused. I hope my blood may cement the good fortune of the French."
  • Napoleon became the savior of the French republic when he successfully defended the National Convention from Royalists. The Directory appointed Napoleon to lead a French Army against Austria and won a bunch of battles. The Directory lost control of political situation and the confidence of the French people. Napoleon's friends urged him to take power. He seized the national legislature and set up three consuls. He was the main consul. Napoleon set up an efficient method of tax collection and established a national banking system to control the economy. Took steps to end corruption in the government. Signed an agreement with Pope Pius VII establishing a relationship with the church. Introduced the Napoleonic Code.
  • Napoleon set up a blockade against the British but was successful on doing so. The British responded with their own blockade. During the Peninsular War, guerillas ambushed Napoleon's troops and Napoleon couldn't combat against them. He lost around 300,000 troops. Napoleon tried to invade Russia but Russian forces kept retreating and burnt everything so Napoleon wouldn't have supplies. Winter hit and Napoleon finally decided to retreat. This was a mistake because they ambushed them and only 10,000 out of 420,000 survived. At the battle of Leipzig, Napoleon was able to establish another army but they were inexperienced and they quickly got defeated. Napoleon returned to reclaim his throne after being exiled to Elba. Napoleon attacked the British army who were preparing near a small village called Waterloo. Prussian forces arrived two days later and then slowly pushed back the French forces. Napoleon's troops were exhausted and gave out. Napoleon's last bid for power is called the hundred days war.
