Before the French Revolution, France was considered the most advanced country in Europe. Although there was great issues going on in France. The first problem was the social ranks people got. The monarchs got first class and merchants got second class whilst everyone else was third class. The class system were known as estates. The Third estate paid the most taxes whilst everyone else was scotch free. Prices were skyrising and people were questioning things after the enlightenment era.
The Tennis Court Oath
Factors that led to the revolution were new ideas forming about government.. There were very drastic economic problems, France had a weak leader, there was growing resentment among the Third Estate and there was a vast food shortage. French Citizens started questioning the division in their society after Rousseau argued against all class divisions. The harvest was so bad that the price of bread. This later caused the Women's March on Versailles.
The Storming of the Bastille
The meeting of the Estates General was when all three Estates come together and vote on matters. Each Estate gets one vote to represent their Estate. When it came to voting, the Third Estate was always outvoted by the First and Second Estate to a 2-1 Decision. Frustrated the Third Estate wanted to make some changes, thus the National Assembly was assembled.
The Great Fear
The leading spokesman for the Third Estate viewpoint was a clergyman sympathetic to their cause. Emmanuel-Joseph Sieyes suggested for them to changed their name to the National Assembly and pass laws and reforms in the name of the French people. In June 17, 1789 proclaiming an end to monarchy and the beginning to a Representative government. Three days later the National Assembly was locked out of their meeting room so they broke down a door to an indoor tennis court, pledging to stay until they had a new constitution.
Rumors were arising that King Louis was going to use military force to disassemble the National Assembly. Foreign troops were going to come to Paris to massacre French Citizens. People started gathering weapons to defend Paris. On July 14, 1789 a mob of people were searching for gunpowder and arms stormed the Bastille, a prison in Paris. They overwhelmed the guards and seized control. Attackers killed the commander and has his head and several others on pikes.
Before long, the rebellion from Paris made its way to the countryside. Rumors were that nobles were hiring outlaws to terrorize the peasants. This sent a wave of senseless panic throughout France where peasants became outlaws. They were armed with pitchforks/farm tools, broke into manors and destroyed documents that bound them to pay feudal dues or burned down the houses altogether.
