- [3] THUG: "You ain't gonna keep hidin' him for long!"
- ...At least, not until they arrive at the police building. A group of men are cornering Atticus, demanding to see someone: Tom Robinson.
- [1] ATTICUS: I'm not letting any of you in. You all can go home.
- The kids do their best to keep quiet, though it's hard when there are so many angry men yelling. Atticus stays firm during the confrontation, but the children can see his hands shaking.
- [2] WALTER: "We know he's in there, Finch!"
- [4] SCOUT (WHISPERING): "Is that-?"
- [5] JEM: "SHHH!"
- Scout mistakes these people as the ones Atticus talked to at church. Thinking they'd be friendly, and wanting to surprise Atticus, she runs in.
- [1] SCOUT: "Hey, Atticus!"
- [2] JEM: "SCOUT, NO!"
- Scout is utterly humiliated. She has no idea who any of these people are, apart from Walter Cunningham. She can feel every last eye staring her down.
- She's thrusted herself into a dangerous situation, and doesn't quite know how to get out. Meanwhile, Atticus' attention is turned towards Jem, whom he knows dragged everyone out here in the first place. After this, he will instruct Jem to take Scout and Dill home, regardless of how many times he refuses.
- [4] SCOUT: "Um. Entitlements are bad?"
- [1] ATTICUS: "Jem. Take Scout and Dill home."
- [2] JEM: "I will not, sir."
- [3] ATTICUS: "Take them home."
