Storyboard Text

  • Yes my friend, volcanoes are classified based on shape.
  • Are there different types of volcanoes?
  • There are three types of volcanoes: cinder cones (also called spatter cones), composite volcanoes (also called stratovolcanoes), and shield volcanoes.
  • What are those?
  • Shield volcanoes, which get their name from their broad rounded shape, are the largest. Composite volcanoes are the next largest. Cinder cones are the smallest, and almost too small to see next to a volcano like Mauna Loa.
  • What are those?
  • The Earth’s crust is made up of huge slabs called plates, which fit together like a jigsaw puzzle. These plates sometimes move. The friction causes earthquakes and volcanic eruptions near the edges of the plates. The theory that explains this process is called plate tectonics.
  • A while ago, you mentioned something about the eruption, why do volcanoes erupt ?
  • When volcanoes erupt they can spew hot, dangerous gases, ash, lava and rock that can cause disastrous loss of life and property. Volcanic eruptions can also cause secondary events, such as floods, landslides and mudslides if there is accompanying rain, snow or melting ice.
  • Last question, what happens during volcanic eruptions?
  • You're welcome my friend
  • Thank you! I've learned a lot from you, and I look forward to learning more every day
