  • Lincoln's Assasination
  • Powell Attacks Seward and His Family
  • Lincoln Dies
  • Lincoln was so near. If Booth wished to, he could reach out and tap him with the muzzle of the pistol. No one in the box had seen or heard him enter. They all continued to watch the action on stage. Booth began the performance he had rehearsed in his mind again and again. He stepped toward Lincoln, raised his right arm to shoulder height, and extended the pistol forward. He was so close to the president now that all he had to do was point the Derringer. Booth squeezed the trigger. (Swanson, 39)
  • Booth and Herold in a Forest
  • Powell used every ounce of strength he had to land a tremendous blow but, in the dark, missed twice. Determined not to miss again, he delivered a mighty blow to Seward's throat. The agonized groan that came from the bed told Powell that he had finally hit his target. (Swanson, 55)
  • Booth Dies
  • It was 7:20 A.M., April 15th, 1865. More than once, they had thought Lincoln had passed away. But the strong body resisted death many times through the long night.Abraham Lincoln took his last breath. His heart stopped beating at 7:22 and 10 seconds. It was over. 'He is gone. He is dead,' one of the doctors said. (Swanson, 102)
  • Booth's Accomplices Die(Left to Right)Mary Surratt, Lewis Powell, David Harold, George Atzerodt
  • Booth and Herold entered the pines, dismounted, and tied off their horses. Exhausted, the two men unrolled their blankets on the damp earth, laid down, and gazed up at the immense black sky decorated by countless points of twinkling light. I would be morning in a few hours. If Captain Cox's word was true, it was safe to doze off until then (Swanson, 117-118)
  • Boston Corbett watched the assassin's every move inside the barn. Unseen by Booth, he walked up to one side of the barn and peeked between one of the gaps in the barn walls. As the flames grew brighter, Corbett could see his prey clearly. The sergeant watched Booth and drew his pistol. Booth leveled the carbine against his hip, as though preparing to bring it into firing position. Corbett poked the barrel of his revolver through the slit in the wall, aimed at Booth, and fired. The soldiers heard on shot. Instantly, Booth dropped the carbine and crumpled to his knees. (Swanson, 173)
  • An officer left the War Department and delivered death warrants to the defendants Mary Surratt, David Herold, George Atzerotd, and Lewis Powell. They would be hanged tomorrow morning. The rapid conviction, sentencing, and execution of the Lincoln assassination conspirators concluded the trial that had lasted through May and June. Four of Booth's helpers and henchmen Edmond Spangler, Micheal O'Laughlin, Samuel Arnold, and Dr. Samuel Mudd, received prison sentences. (Swanson, 187)
