Storyboard Text

  • Maybe we should leave Arnold alone
  • I can't guard Rowdy
  • You can do it
  • I jumped higher than Rowdy!
  • Junior is going to take the ball!
  • When Junior showed up to his grandmother's wake, he notices, "And nobody gave me any crap. I mean, I was still the kid who had betrayed the tribe. And that couldn't be forgiven. But I was also the kid who'd lost his grandmother. And everyone knew that losing my grandmother was horrible" (Alexie 159).
  • HAHAHA
  • You're scaring me
  • After Junior found out he would be guarding Rowdy, he says, "Coach,' I said. 'I'm really honored by this. But I don't think I can do it.' He walked over to me, kneeled, and pushed his forehead against mine. Our eyes were, like, an inch apart. I could smell the cigarettes and chocolate on his breath. 'You can do it,' Coach said" (Alexie 188).
  • Why would she say that?
  • I should stand up for him
  • After Rowdy stole the ball from Reardan's side and went to dunk it, Junior realizes, "I knew he'd fly into the air about five feet from the hoop. I knew he'd jump about 2 feet higher than I could. So I needed to jump quicker. And Rowdy rose into the air. And I rose with him. AND THEN I ROSE ABOVE HIM!" (Alexie 191-192)
  • Quit talking and play ball
  • After finding out his sister died, Junior says, "You're alive!' I shouted. 'You're alive!' 'But your sister-,' he said. 'I know, I know,' I said. 'She's dead. But you're alive. You're still alive.' I laughed and laughed. I couldn't stop laughing. I felt like I might die of laughing" (Alexie 204).
  • After Junior's teacher made a comment about him missing school so much, Junior thinks, "If I'd been stronger, I would have stood up to her. I would have called her names. I would have walked across the room and slapped her. But I was too broken. Instead, It was Gordy who defended me. He stood with his textbook and dropped it" (Alexie 175).
  • You really shouldn't be missing this much school
  • Junior, who realized that he was still Rowdy's best friend, describes, "Rowdy and I played one-on-one for hours. We played until dark. We played until the streetlights lit up the court. We played until the bats swooped down at our heads. We played until the moon was huge and golden and perfect in the dark sky. We didn't keep score" (Alexie 230).
