- Ruskin Bond lived with his Grandfather and Grandmother in Dehradun (Shimla). His Grandfather had many pet animals. Bond's first pet was a squirrel. Baby elephant was a pet kept by his Grandfather had. The elephant once tried to befriend a big bird. But, he suffered a painful kick. The baby elephant grew up with Bond and to great disappointment was left in the zoo when he grew up.

- One winter morning Grandfather found an Owl. The owl ate raw meat and water and settled down under Bond's bed. Grandfather another owl and to his surprise found a nest in the rain water pipe. After ten days he released all the owls.

- Once to travel to Bond's aunt Ms. Mabel's house in Lucknow. The parrot Popeye, Chips the squirrel and the tiger accompanied them in train. Grandfather's pet python was discovered in the tiffin basket by Bond. It managed to scar all the passengers by escaping to the washroom. The tiger was from the forest and grew up with Bond. He had to left in the zoo after he grew up. Grandfather occasionally visited him. Once they said the tiger was dead. But, Grandfather knew that it was not so.
- They took the parrot, the tiger and the squirrel. They Traveled to Lucknow to their aunt's House. Unknowingly, the python hid himself in the tiffin basket and ended up scaring the travelers. The grandfather got the teenage tiger from the forest.
