Storyboard Text

  • Exposition
  • Grab a slip of paper and see what it has on it. This will determine your fate. 
  • Conflict
  • This is not fair! He didn't even get enough time to choose. 
  • That's not fair! He didn't even get enough time to choose!
  • Rising Action
  • You must each choose a new slip of paper from the box. That will be fair. 
  • The people gather around for the annual lottery that takes place in the center of their small village square at the end of June. Mr. Summers explains the rules to everyone and tells them they have to grab a slip of paper from the box and see what it has on it.
  • Climax
  • Bill, Tessie's husband, grabs a slip of paper with a black dot on it. Tessie starts arguing saying that Bill didn't get enough time to choose and that it wasn't fair.
  • Falling Action
  • The whole Hutchinson family was called up to the box. Mr. Summers decides to put five slips of paper into the box. He even included the one Bill previously drew from the box. 
  • Resolution
  • Each family member draws a paper from the box. All of the members had a blank slip of paper. All except for one. Tessie ends up drawing the slip of paper with the black dot. 
  • Tessie once again begins to scream that it's not fair and that this whole situation isn't right. As she continues with her screaming villagers start picking up and gathering rocks. They want to finish this before it's time for dinner.
  • Suddenly everyone starts pelting Tessie with rocks. One hits her in the head and she begins bleeding. Old man Warner encourages the villagers to keep going because they need to stick to tradition. They continue to hit her with stones as she suffers in pain.
