Cell Cycle Storyboard That Project

Storyboard Text

  • oh hey! great to have you back! since you asked and well since you need it, I'll explain to you the Cell cycle.
  • uhm, hello! can you explain to me whats going on since.. well... I was absent for a week.
  • To get an idea of everything think of the cell cycle as a pie chart
  • One of them is called interphase, where the cells are growing, replicating their DNA or just doing their cell functions and spend most of their time in interphase and the other one is called M phase which includes mitosis and the splitting of the cytoplasm or cytokinesis
  • Cells are in one of two phases
  •
  • ohhh okay I see!
  • So back to the pie chart, you can think of interphase as being split into 3 groups, Gap 1, Synthesis, and Gap 2
  • During G1 the cell grows, in S phase it replicates its DNA and in G2 the cell just grows some more preparing for Mitosis
  • Then we have M phase where mitosis will happen
  • this might take a while...
  • Oh and there are some cells that don’t go through some of the phases because they’re in G0
  • Yes, the cells in here are still performing cell functions but they’re not ready to divide just yet
  • Some cells only stay in G0 for a bit but others stay permanently, and with that out of the way lets talk about mitosis!
  • Are they still performing cell functions?
  • The chromosomes are condensing which basically means they're thickening and visible
  • Prophase is the first step and in this step the nucleus is still inside the cell
  • There are 4 stages of mitosis, those being  prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase
  • ohhhhhh I see I see
  • In metaphase the nucleus has already been disassembled and the chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell
  • Yes... until anaphase starts
  • So now the chromosomes are just waiting there all alone?!
