Carter Druse
"Well, go, sir, and whatever may occur do what you conceive to be your duty.
Greetings, My name is Carter Druse. I live in western Virginia, lots of folk out here think I live in West Virginia but that's simply not true.
Another importantcharacter is Carters father. The characterization is very direct for Carter but not for Mr. Druse. what I know about Carter is that he is very patriotic and courageous. Mr. Druse is proud of his son and supportive of him based on what he said.Carters motivations are too protect his country/state.
In the beginning of "The Horseman in the Sky," Carter is dutiful and loyal. Cater is committed to the union cause as a dedicated soldier. Likewise, he was a respectful son to his father even thought they are different. Lastly, in the beginning, there is a subtle current of internal conflict as the decides to be loyal to his family or country.
Father, a Union regiment has arrived at Grafton. I am going to join it.
Many people describe me as courageous and patriotic

Carter druse faces many challenges in the story "Horsemen in the Sky." he has a moral dilemma, fear and pressure, and feels very very isolated. His biggest fear is to shoot the opposing soldier. Dialogue and plot events affect the story in many ways; "Carter Druse grew pale; he shook in every limb, turned faint, and saw the statuesque group before him as black figures, rising, falling, moving unsteadily in arcs of circles in a fiery sky."
At the end of the story Carter is a changed man. he transformed from a young man torn in between being a loyal son or soldier. He ends up prioritizing his duty as a soldier. He is still scared and hurt from what he did. "Duty had conquered; the spirit had said to the body: 'peace be still' and fired."
In the middle of the story Carter is faced with a moral dilemma. He faces a harrowing choice of shooting the mysterious horsemen who was his father all along. Also, he ends up shooting and protects his other soldiers. "Perhaps he was only admiring the view. perhaps he would now turn around and ride carelessly away."
