  • The Coercive acts, called the Intolerable Acts by the colonists, were implemented to punish the colonists for their actions during the Boston Tea Party. Nearly unlimited power of Massachusetts was granted to British General Gage, who replaced the colony’s elected council. Boston Harbor was closed, and colonists were forced to provide food and shelter for British soldiers.
  • During the first Continental Congress, the colonists decided they had to unite in order to possibly oppose the British. In Philadelphia, representatives acting for each colony spoke and debated. They voted to boycott all British merchandise, and create colonial militias.
  • In Massachusetts, the first bullets of the war were fired when the British ordered the destruction of colonial militia supplies. This symbolic moment in history is often described as the shot heard around the world. While only eight colonial minutemen died, seventy-three British soldiers were killed as they returned to Boston.
