  • Fourscore and seven years ago our fathers brought forth, on this continent, a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the preposition that all men are created equal.
  • Slavery in America began in 1619 when 20 African slaves were brought to the British colony of Jamestown, Virginia. In the following centuries, countless Africans were kidnapped from the continent of Africa and sold in the slave trade. In fact, it it estimated that 6 to 7 million African slaves were imported to the Americas during the 18th century. Slave-owners profited from cotton produced by African laborers, especially after the invention of the cotton gin. Ultimately, slavery was the issue that divided the country into sections, resulting in the Civil War. Slavery was finally abolished by the 13th amendment in 1865.
  • The Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 was a law designed by Stephan Douglas that allowed settlers to vote whether the Kansas and Nebraska territories would permit slavery. This violated the terms of the 1820 Missouri Compromise, which asserted that territories north of the 36°30' line would not tolerate slavery. Northerners were enraged, and tensions soared between the North and the South. This resulted in "Bleeding Kansas," an uprising in which both proslavery border ruffians and antislavery supporters flocked to Kansas to vote in violent elections.
  • Abraham Lincoln was elected the 16th President of the United States (and first Republican President) in 1860. His competitors included Stephen Douglas, John Breckinridge, and John Bell, the first of which earned him national attention in a debate for a Senate seat in 1858. Despite not being an option on the Southern ballot, he won 40% of the popular vote, including every Northern state. Lincoln was a major supporter of anti-slavery, and his election resulted in the secession of several Southern pro-slavery states, which formed the Confederacy.
