The lottery

It was the morning of June 27th, and everyone in town was gathering around for the town lottery. The children came first, which in following played with stones and the such. They were soon followed by the adults of the town, who talked and joked away from the children’s playful activities.

The citizens soon gathered at the square and all lined up in their respective family as a person placed a black box in front of them. Everyone got prepared to draw, when suddenly one of the townsfolk, named Tessie, arrived in a hurry. She was just barely late and quickly lined up with her family, as the lottery began.

One by one, every family draws a single slip of paper, tensions as high as they were every year. Once everyone had a slip of paper, everyone opened their slips in complete synchronization. As everyone reported their slips, everyone was horrified to find that Tessie’s husband was the one who had the winning slip of paper. Tessie told the crowd that it wasn’t fair, but soon reluctantly came forward to draw again. The tension was palpable in the air as they slowly opened their slips of paper.
