It is 1833 and Douglass was 16. Douglass was a horse when he first came to their house. He had no education and didn’t know his age nor his birthday. Frederick Douglass learned what abolition and abolitionist means from his master's wife and from other people who were willing to teach him. His master, Mr. Auld, found Douglass defiant and rented him out to a nearby slaveholder named Covey.

Frederick Douglass met a slave called Sandy Jenkins, who gives Douglass a magic root. Douglass believes that the root will not work, but takes it anyway because Jenkins was as stubborn as a mule.
Douglass decides to return back to the plantation before Covey finds out. When he returned, Covey didn’t whip Douglass. The next couple of days went by smoothly. Douglass thought the root might have actually worked.
When Douglass was inside the shed doing some work, Covey comes inside with a rope, attempting to tie Douglass up. But instead, Douglass dodged it and a fight had started. He used the root as a weapon to fight Covey.
