Storyboard Text

  • The fighting began outside of a free state town, Lawrence, located in Douglass County. A pro-slavery settler named Charles Dow killed a free-stater. This was the start of a conflict known as the Wakarusa War, named after a nearby river. After the killing frees-staters began gathering in Lawrence to start plotting revenge against Dow. A southern sympathizer heard about this and gathered a group of Missourians and headed toward Lawrence. They camped six miles outside of town.
  • A blockade was created, not allowing any supplies into the city. However, some residents managed to get supplies through the blockade. Two women managed to get ammunition into Lawrence by sewing bullets into their clothes. In response to Sheriff Jones' actions, John Brown and James Lane collected a force to defend the town.
  • The siege lasted nine days. A free-stater, Thomas Barber, was killed in the battle. The loss greatly effected John Brown. One month after it began, the two sides came to an agreement, ending the siege.
