American pioneers traveled 2,000 miles from Independence, Missouri to Oregon City, Oregon. The journey across the plains and Rockies was very difficult and dangerous to many pioneers but it provided them with hope for a new beginning.

In 1848 there was a discovery of gold nuggets in Sacramento Valley. Thousands of people called forty-niners came from across the U.S came to California in the hopes of becoming rich.

The Transcontinental Railroad stretched from the East to West. It made it easier for pioneers to travel and supplies to be delivered. It brought capitalism to the Western United States.

The Homestead Act granted Americans 160-acre plots for a small fee. President Lincoln said the purpose of this act was to give everyone the chance of starting their own life.
Manifest Destiny was an idea that first came around in the early 1800s in the colonies. This idea expressed the belief of expanding the nation across North America because it was the right given by God.
I'm really going to miss my home in Maryland when I move to Oregon.

The Westward Expansion was a great change for the United States. Some laws were good and some were bad. such as the Homestead Act because it gave people their own land. Some bad reaons were the Native Americans getting kicked off their landed and forced to move somewhere else.
All the hard work paid off!
