- All participants were asked the complete this task on their to start with, and were then places into groups to complete it again.
- Which of the three lines on the right hand side, is the same as the line on the left?
- It is A!
- Hmmm I thought it was C...
- However, when participants were placed in groups, several of the group members were stooges and deliberately picked the wrong answer
- We all agree, the answer is A!
- On average, about one third (32%) of the participants who were placed in this situation went along and conformed with the clearly incorrect majority on the critical trials.
- Over the 12 critical trials, about 75% of participants conformed at least once, and 25% of participants never conformed.In the control group, with no pressure to conform to confederates, less than 1% of participants gave the wrong answer.
- Conformity is something that everyone should be aware of not only in our personal lives, but within our working environment. How many creative ideas and chances of growth are lost because of conformity?
