- Bella walked into Biology class with a fan behind her making her scent reach to Edward in a very harsh way. From smelling Bella's scent he immediately turned into a vampire, scared of his decisions from what he wanted to do next. He became vulnerable to killing Bella and wanting to kill the whole class as well.
- "I knew what had to happen now. The girl would have to come sit beside me, and I would have to kill her. The innocent bystanders in this classroom, eighteen other children and one man could not be allowed to leave, having seen what they would soon see. I flinched at the though of what I must do. Even at my very worst, I had never committed this kind of atrocity. I have never killed innocents. And now I planned to slaughter twenty of them at once" (12).

- Bella was heading into her red truck until a car slipped on ice and starting to smash right into Bella. Edward who was on the other side of the parking lot ran to move Bella out of the way, saving her from the accident. While Bella knows he was on the other side, Edward is trying to hide his identity from Bella.
- "I was standing right next to you, Bella" (59).
- "I knew that I was in the middle of a crisis. How much has she seen? Had any other witnesses watched me materialize at her side and then juggle the van while I tried to keep her out form under it. These questions should be my biggest concern. But I was too anxious to really care about he threat of exposure as much as I should" (58).
- "How did you get over here so fast?" (59).

- "Right here killing you. I was barely aware of anything else. Sound faded, the light seemed dim behind my lids, there was nothing else really, just the blood. Even Alice's thoughts, nearly screaming at me, felt muted and far away" (581).
- Bella got bit by a vampire, James, who tortured Bella for fun since he has a special ability of hunting. The Cullen family find her and want to save her by not letting her turn into a vampire. Edward has to take the venom out of Bella's arm without trying to kill her.
- "He's right here, Bella" (581).
- "Edward!" (581).
