Storyboard Text

  • One major theme of "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street" by Rod Serling is that fear and suspicion is destructive. For example, In the scene when all of the residents surround Less Goodman's porch after accusing him of being the monster. This shows how quickly the people were willing to point a finger at someone just because everyone is afraid of a monster being among them they were willing to throw their neighbor and friend under the bus. Also, the part when Charlie shot Pete Van Horn because he thought it was the monster killing him in the process. This scene really shows how far the people are willing to go because they are afraid that they would start destroying each other because of their suspicion. Lastly, at the end of the story when we see the aliens watching maple street from the mountains Figure One says "the world is full of maple streets. And we'll go from one to the other and let them destroy themselves." This dialog tells us that all the humans are the same and that they would destroy themselves because of fear, this also shows that the aliens already know that instead of fighting they could use fear and suspicion to let them destroy themselves. As you can see, the main theme of The Monsters are Due on Maple Street is that fear and suspicion is destructive.
