Montresor bumps meet Fortunato during Carnival in Italy and offer to share a fine bottle of Amontillado wine with him. This bottle, however, is in his catacombs. It's late at night, and Fortunato appears to be sick.
Montresor, the narrator, states that Fortunato has insulted him and is calculating his retaliation. Although he does not reveal what Fortunato did, he makes it clear that it was inexcusable.
Montresor entices Fortunato into the spooky wine cellar. Montresor keeps asking Fortunato whether he wants to turn back as the suspense mounts. To relieve his cough, Fortunato continues to consume wine.

When they arrive, there is no Amontillado, only a hole in the wall. Montresor chains Fortunato within and proceeds to brick up the hole. Fortunato begs for Montresor to stop as the last few bricks are poured, but it is too late. Montresor exacted his vengeance.
Montresor goes away, leaving just the jingling jester bells of Fortunato ringing in the tomb. He replaces the crypt's bones. Finally, he boasts that no one has disturbed them in 50 years; he has succeeded in his scheme!
