  • The Son of Laius and Jocasta
  • King and Queen Of Corinth
  • King Laius versus Oedipus
  • King Laius and Queen Jocasta, prior to the birth of their son Oedipus, were warned by an oracle that their son would kill his father and marry his mother. To prevent this prophecy, the king ordered a servant to have Oedipus left at the top of a mountain, with his legs tied together.
  • The Sphinx
  • What walks on four feet in the morning, two in the afternoon, and three at night?
  • The servant, unable, to leave Oedipus, brought him to a shepherd, who brought Oedipus to King Polybus and Queen Merope of Corinth. They adopted him and raised him as there own.
  • The New King of Thebes
  • After a confrontation with a drunkard, Oedipus visited an oracle, who told him the truth about his prophecy. In an attempt to prevent this from happening, Oedipus left Corinth. On the way to the city of Thebes, Oedipus came across a chariot driven by King Laius. Oedipus did not know he was his real father nor did he know he was the king. They had an argument, and Oedipus killed the king.
  • The Prophecy is Revealed
  • Oedipus continues towards Thebes, but he soon encounters a mythical creature called the Sphinx. The Sphinx is a creature that has been terrorizing the travelers to Thebes, for ages. She asks a riddle to those who dare to come near her. If you answer correctly, you will be free to continue on. If someone answers her riddle wrong, they will be killed and eaten. Oedipus is able to answer her riddle correctly, and move on to Thebes.
  • Man
  • Creon, Queen Jacosta's brother, had said that any person who could solve the riddle of the Sphinx, would be made King of Thebes. This person would also receive the Queen's hand in marriage. Oedipus inherits the throne, and marries the Queen, fulfilling the prophecy. Together, they have 4 children: two daughters (Antigone, and Ismene), and 2 sons, (Eteocoles and Polynices).
  • Any person who defeats the Sphinx, will become King of Thebes! and marry the queen!
  • Many years later, through a series of events, the truth is discovered that Oedipus killed his father and married his mother. Queen Jocasta commits suicide once she finds out. When Oedipus finds her, he uses a pin from her gown to stab both of his eyes out in distress. Oedipus is then exiled out of Corinth. His two daughters leave with him and guide him as he blindly walks through the desert.
