  • Mars is more Earth-like than any other planet in the solar system, making it an attractive second option got the human race. The confirmation that liquid water once flowed on Mars, the existence of nutrients, and the previous discovery of a past magnetic field that protected the planet from cosmic and solar radiation, together strongly suggest that Mars could have had the environmental factors to support life.
  • First, we will discuss why Mars is the our best refuge if our planet were to be destroyed.
  • Now, as for how we can make planet Mars inhabitable. Human survival on Mars would require living in artificial habitats with complex life-support systems. One key aspect of this would be water processing systems. Extracting water locked up in ice will be crucial, but the recent discovery of flowing water on Mars may not be too difficult.
  • We will also need self-sustaining food and oxygen. There is an atmosphere thick enough to protect crops grown on the surface from solar flares. Therefore, thin-walled inflatable plastic greenhouses secured by unpressurized UV-resistant hard-plastic shield domes can be utilized to rapidly create cropland on the surface. Food might be “printed.” We are working on a 3D printer to mold protein, starch, and fat into shapes and microjet in flavors and nutrients. Plants might be used to produce oxygen. We plan to convert the carbon dioxide that dominates the thin Martian air into oxygen using MOXIE—a machine able to manufacture three-quarters of an ounce of oxygen an hour. We would also need to handle the harsh Martian environment, either serviceable while wearing an EVA suit or housed inside a human-habitable environment. Dust on the planet might be able to create 3D printed habitats.
